HANOI/NEW DELHI. Vietnam has exceeded the annual targets for 2019. The Vietnam Cashew Association (Vinacas) states that the prospects for 2020 are very much encouraging. Political-economic tensions, however, render it difficult to forecast prices.

High imports of raw materials

Vinacas states that Vietnam exported 450,000 metric tonnes of cashew kernels and imported 1.5 million metric tonnes of RCN for further processing. This has exceeding the targeted figures. In 2020, the aim is to improce quality and processing efficiency. The tensions between the US, China and India impact the global economy and render it difficult to forecast any developments in price over the next few months. In addition, the increase in tariffs in India may prompt a decline in imports from Vietnam.

Stable market in India

India exported cashews worth USD 523.3 million in January-November 2019, which is decline of 14.8% year-on-year. Contrary to this, the export volume has risen by 4,000 metric tonnes to 74,645 metric tonnes. In order to strengthen the domestic cashew industry, the All India Cashew Growers Association is calling for a ban on imports of cashew nuts from Vietnam and other countries, and for the official minimum price to be adjusted. The prices for cashews, W240 had briefly climbed to a level of 10,110 USD per metric tonne FOB India. In the meantime, demand has declined again, which is why export prices have fallen to the previous week's level of 9,300 USD per metric tonne FOB.
