Stable demand
The cashew season has come to an end in the northern hemisphere, and according to the experts at ofi, around 10% more cashews were exported worldwide in the 2024/25 season than in the previous year. Most of these were shipped by the end of July, easing the raw material shortage for processors in Vietnam and India somewhat. According to ofi, processing peaked in Asia and Africa in the third quarter, and exports will increase in the coming months as suppliers have to fulfil their existing contracts. Purchases from key consumer regions such as the EU, China and the Middle East have increased, causing stocks to become tight. In the first two quarters, the US had also purchased more cashews, but imports subsequently declined due to the tariffs introduced by Trump and market uncertainties.
Shipments to the USA have declined significantly
Demand from India has also fallen, but market experts believe it will recover from September onwards when the festival season begins. Buying interest in China and Europe is also likely to remain stable for the time being. The strong euro has ensured brisk trading activity and buyers have covered part of their needs, but will continue to strike when prices are good. In the USA, however, a further decline in demand is to be expected, as consumers will also be cautious due to high retail prices. For example, the Vietnam Cashew Association (Vinacas) reports that Vietnam exported a total of 83,000 mt of cashews worth USD 561 million to the USA in the period from January to July 2025, which is 27.5% less in volume and 11.7% less in value than in the same period last year. Vietnam still holds a market share of over 87% in the US, but the value is declining.
EU imports have risen
EU cashew imports increased by just under 5% in the period from 1 January to 14 September 2025 compared to the same period last year. Vietnam remains by far the most important supplier, increasing its exports to the EU by 4.6% to 92,603 mt. With 21,579 mt, Côte d'Ivoire supplied almost 40% more cashews to the EU, and Nigeria also increased its shipments. India ranks third among the most important EU suppliers with 5,916 mt, but has suffered a decline of 16%. The most important buyer countries in the EU during the period mentioned were Germany, the Netherlands and Spain, followed by Italy and France. The average import price was EUR 6.45/kg, a good 20% higher than last year.
