Cashews: Illegal imports put prices under pressure

NEW DELHI. Cheap imports mainly consisting of low-quality broken nuts are currently flooding the cashew market in India. The prices in India are under pressure.

Prices down by 12%

This month the prices in India have declined by 0.20-1.20 USD/kg. Smaller kernels and broken nuts have most notably lost up to 12% in value within a very short time. Cheap imports from Vietnam, Mozambique and the Ivory Coast are held responsible. Cashews are mainly produced for the export market in these countries and cheap broken nuts are shipped overseas at low prices.

As the Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPCI) reports, the nuts are illegally imported under an incorrect customs tariff number to circumvent import duties. Impo
