Cashews: Vietnam's exports to Russia increase significantly

HANOI. As reported by the Russian customs office, the country imported about 50% more cashew nuts from Vietnam in the first half of 2021 than in the corresponding period of 2020. Vietnam also remains the most important supplier of German imports.

Average export price increased

According to the Vietnam Customs Department, cashew exports in August reached 60,000 mt worth just under USD 370 million, down 13% in volume, but up 11% in value from July. The average export price was USD 6,634/mt, up about 13.5% from August 2020. As reported by the Vietnam Cashew Association (Vinacas), enquiries for shipments between January and April 2022 are already being received, especially from the USA and Europe, and there is also good demand from China. Prices on the European spot market have fallen slightly compared to the beginning of the month and are currently at EUR 7.30/kg FCA Spain for Vietnamese cashew kernels, WW240.

Russia as a promising export market

According to Vinacas, the Russian market currently offers particularly good prospects. According to the Russian customs office, the country imported 8,500 mt of cashew nuts worth around USD 31 million in the first six months of the year, which corresponds to a 50% increase in volume and a 22% increase in value compared to the same period last year. In addition to imports from Vietnam, Russia also increased its imports from Belarus, while most other supplier countries experienced decreases.

Germany also increases imports

Vietnam remains the most important supplier of cashews not only in Russia, but also in Germany. Between September 2020 and July 2021, Germany imported 35,059 mt of cashews from Vietnam, which corresponds to an increase of a good 5% compared to the same period last year. There were significant increases in shipments from Indonesia (116.5%) and the Ivory Coast (474.5%), while noticeable declines were recorded from India (-19.4%) and the Netherlands (-18.2%), which occupy second and third place among the most important suppliers for Germany.
