HANOI/ACCRA. High prices and sustained strong demand are bringing Vietnam's export target of USD 4.5 billion for 2025 within reach. Meanwhile, the African Cashew Alliance is calling for greater investment in cashew research.

High export prices

In view of strong global demand and persistently high export prices, the Vietnamese cashew industry is aiming for an export target of USD 4.5 billion this year, according to the Vietnam Cashew Association (Vinacas). In August alone, the country's exports amounted to around 70,000 mt worth USD 431 million, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. In the period from January to August 2025, they amounted to 482,700 mt worth USD 3.24 billion. This represents a slight year-on-year decline in volume of 1.2%, while the export value increased by 16.4%. This is due to the high average export price of USD 6,711/mt, which is 17.8% above last year's level.

Target within reach

To reach the target of USD 4.5 billion, the industry will need to generate an additional USD 1.26 billion between September and December. This seems realistic, as these are strong sales months, mainly due to holiday demand from key markets such as the US, Europe and China. Exports to China have climbed by an impressive 47% this year, while the US imported 11.7% fewer cashews from Vietnam. The highest growth rate was recorded by Latvia, whose imports from Vietnam rose by 57%.

Apart from exports, Vietnam has also increased its RCN imports to meet demand from processors. In the first eight months of the year, companies invested USD 3.3 billion in imports from Cambodia, Côte d'Ivoire, Tanzania and Ghana. Cambodia remains the most important supplier due to its proximity and the resulting low logistics costs, according to Vinacas.

ACA calls for increased research

The African Cashew Alliance (ACA) has called on governments, development partners and industry representatives to make robust, sustainable and competitive investments in cashew research in order to secure the future of the industry. This call was made by ACA board member Soro Beh at the International Cashew Research Conference (ICRC) 2025, which took place in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. Beh emphasised that cashew production has grown significantly in recent years, playing a crucial role in the economic growth of the countries concerned, but that threats such as climate change and plant diseases must be effectively countered. He therefore called on the governments of producing countries to “prioritize research in their national agricultural agendas, by allocating resources to research institutions, agricultural extension and related initiatives”, as reported by the ACA.
