ROME. The unusually early start to the season brought both advantages and disadvantages for Italian chestnut traders. The crop volume is twice as high as last year, and market players report good quality.

Exports save the day

With regard to this year's chestnut crop, the experts at FreshPlaza spoke to local market players to get an idea of the situation. Luca Castellino, owner of Fratelli Castellino in Piedmont, for example, reports a rather unusual season, which started early and with a crop twice as large as last year. The first chestnuts were delivered on 1 September, earlier than ever before. The weather played a decisive role and continues to do so, especially in terms of sales. The high temperatures in early autumn prompted buyers to consume fresh fruit such as melons rather than chestnuts, causing sales to decline after a previous increase. It was mainly export sales that saved the day. In Northern and Eastern Europe, where temperatures are already low, chestnuts are enjoying great popularity earlier in the year. “Platforms and distributors in Slovenia, Lithuania and Estonia began requesting the product right away, enabling us to sell the initial batches. There, the early arrival of the Italian season was not seen as unusual, but rather as a valuable opportunity”, said Castellino.

Favourable conditions

Market players agree on the quantity and quality of the 2025 crop – the chestnuts are virtually flawless and of a good size. Many buyers prefer Italian produce to French, as the latter is more difficult to peel and does not store as well. The Italian varieties Garrone Rosso, Garrone Nero and Marrone di Chiusa Pesio are particularly popular.

The situation in other producing countries is having a favourable effect on export conditions in Italy this season. The crop in Romania was smaller and available later than the Italian produce, and the situation is similar in Albania. As a result, demand for Italian chestnuts was high, especially at the beginning of the season, which compensated for low domestic consumption – traders successfully seized their opportunity. However, with the current drop in temperatures, market experts also expect domestic buying interest to pick up soon.
