Chickpeas: Canadian crop to be significantly smaller

NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. Despite an increase in acreage, lower yields mean that Canadian growers are expecting a smaller crop than last year. However, supplies are expected to remain secure. Lower production is also expected in India.

Lower production in India

Chickpea production is down this year in several countries in the Middle East, including Iran, Turkey, Syria and Jordan. In India, too, the crop was smaller than expected. Unseasonal rainfall damaged young plants in several growing regions and led to a lower crop volume. Consequently, deliveries to the main markets remained limited in the second half of May as well.
