NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. The Indian chickpea market has been stagnating for several weeks due to low buying interest, but a slight upward trend is now emerging. In Canada, harvesting is progressing more slowly than usual.

Tight supplies stabilise prices

After several weeks of weak demand for chickpeas, the pulses are now regaining strength, causing commodity prices to rise slightly in the main growing regions. Late rains in Maharashtra have delayed sowing, postponing the harvest and causing a short-term supply shortage. Normally, growers bring their crop to market in the first half of October, but due to the delay, buyers will have to rely on old crop stocks for longer this season. Most small traders have already liquidated their stocks, leaving only limited quantities in circulation
