NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. A revival in demand has breathed new life into the Indian chickpea market. Stocks remain low. In Canada, growers are not yet entirely convinced by the current prices.

Smaller acreage and rain damage

Following a long quiet period, even a slight rise in demand has significantly revitalised the Indian chickpea market. Upon closer examination of crop volumes, market sentiment changed rapidly. The production situation is described as weak: acreage had already been reduced, and untimely rainfall further damaged crops that had already been sown. In mid-May, there is still no supply pressure on the major mandis. Total available stocks from the old and new crops, at 2.4 million mt, are significantly below last year’s level of 3.1 mi
