Chickpeas: EU imports surge in 2023/2024

BRUSSELS/NEW DELHI. As plant-based diets are highly popular and demand for protein crops is increasing global demand is on the rise for chickpeas. This certainly holds true for the EU, where imports have surged in 2023/2024.

High prices

Chickpea prices are still strong in Canada and India as local media report. Official estimates state that Canada’s crop will range 3.6% higher than last year at 132,575 mt. Sentiments are not quite as upbeat in Argentina anymore as weather conditions are causing delays and volumes may be lower than anticipated. Prospects in Turkey are highly encouraging for this year’s crop, but export restrictions were introduced in August and the market is nervous about the crop reports in Argentina.
