NEW DELHI/MOSCOW. Russia has introduced a new export tariff for chickpeas and lentils. EU imports are down. Competition is fierce for India.

5% export tariff

Russia introduced a fixed 5% export duty for legumes such as peas, chickpeas and lentils on 01 January. As Interfax reports the duty applies for exports outside the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and is permanent. The government’s aim is to balance exports and domestic consumption as shipments have risen in recent years. Previous export duties ranged at 4-7%. Exports peaked at a near record of 3.2 million mt in the 2023/2024 marketing year (July-June) on the back of a high production of 4.7 million mt as official figures suggest.
