Chickpeas: heat spells bad news

NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. Heat has reduced yields in some important growing areas for chickpeas in India. Buyers are turning a bit more active.

Short pause before market set to turn

Geopolitical tensions, especially between India and Pakistan, have prompted stockists to buy more chickpeas thereby reducing supplies in Karnataka and Adhra Pradesh. Packaging manufacturers have also entered the market. Maharashtra's raw chickpeas are currently priced at USD 0.75-0.78/kg and Karnataka's at around USD 0.78-0.80/kg. Despite demand being weak due to currency constraints, the market is expected to pause at around USD 0.81/kg before rising.
