Chickpeas: India reduces imports from Australia

CANBERRA/OTTAWA. Indian chickpea imports from Australia will be only about half as high as last year. This is partly due to the large Indian crop. In Canada, the focus is already on the new year.

Traders remain reluctant

Last year, Indian buyers imported almost 1 million mt of chickpeas from Australia. However, current estimates suggest that this volume will be roughly halved in the 2025/26 season, mainly because the domestic crop is expected to be significantly larger. The import of yellow peas also represents a cheaper alternative. So far, around 200,000 mt of Australian chickpeas are said to have been imported, and market players report lower trading activity.
