Chickpeas: large stocks prevent price increases

NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. The new chickpea crop is reaching the Indian markets, where it is being met with large stocks of the old crop; this is depressing prices and also demand. In North America, farmers have so far had little motivation to increase their acreage.

Good quality

Large quantities of the new chickpea crop from Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka have reached the Indian mandis and the quality of the crop is good in all regions according to initial reports. However, as traders are still holding large supplies of the old crop in their warehouses, demand is restrained. This is depressing commodity prices and causing export prices to fall further.
