Chickpeas: market continues to gain strength

NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. The prospect of smaller crops in India and Australia is supporting the global chickpea market. In North America, the focus is on the weather conditions.

Significantly lower crop

Indian chickpea prices continue to climb, even though there are still substantial stocks in the growing regions. Growers and traders in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh are selling only cautiously due to subdued demand. This reluctance to sell is helping to stabilise and further strengthen the market. Following a recovery from previous lows, prices have recently held steady at their current levels and have strengthened slightly further on local markets, driven by demand from stockists and exporters.
