NEW DELHI. Traders are puzzled by the turn the prices for chickpeas have taken in India this year so far.

Traders get it wrong

Assumptions and speculations are presently shaping the market as traders are trying to work out why things have gone so wrong in January. Although supplies are limited and demand is strong, prices failed to rise. The opposite is the case instead as prices have tumbled. While the prices for chickpeas with a 42-44 (12 mm) count, for instance, still ranged at USD 1,810/mt FOB India at the start of the month, they have now slumped by USD 120/mt to USD 1,690/mt FOB India.
