NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. The prices of Indian chickpeas are currently stagnating and traders are trying to sell their old crop. In Canada, the market is remarkably calm.

Prices are struggling

After rising steadily over the last few weeks, Indian chickpea prices seem to have reached a temporary peak and there has been no change in prices compared to last week. The high prices have ensured that farmers have expanded their acreage, which in turn is likely to depress future prices. Commodity prices are already falling slightly. Suppliers are currently trying to reduce their old stocks while the new crop reaches the markets and competes with cheaper imports.
