Chickpeas: price rally continues

NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. Prices on the Indian chickpea market are continuing their upward trend, and due to the shortage of goods, there is no end in sight for the time being. In Canada, market players are expecting a larger acreage for the new season.

No end in sight

Chickpeas, an important staple in Indian cuisine and a globally popular source of protein, have experienced a rollercoaster ride in recent times. In particular, the ongoing shortage of the commodity this season has increased buying interest both in India and globally. Although production has increased from 1.5 million to 2 million mt, this is barely enough to meet demand on the global market, not least due to smaller crops in Ukraine and Canada.
