NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. Demand for Indian chickpeas is low, which is also reflected in prices. In Canada, the plants are susceptible to fungal diseases; growers there need to be particularly vigilant.

Limited downside potential

Despite available stocks, only a small quantity of chickpeas is currently reaching the Indian market. Domestic production is declining, and the marketing of the new crop is already largely complete. As farmers and traders have suffered losses over the past two years, the recent price weakness is regarded as temporary. Low demand has recently caused chickpea prices in Maharashtra to fall.
