NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. After the price declines of recent weeks, the Indian chickpea market should now see some stability. Selling pressure is easing while demand is picking up.

Selling pressure is easing

The Indian chickpea market has been characterised by a clear downward trend in recent months. The new crops from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra had literally flooded the markets and stockists had done everything they could to get their goods to buyers; price reductions were unavoidable. Although there have been further falls in the last two weeks, there now seems to be some stability and the pressure to sell even at very favourable prices is easing. Demand is picking up, which is partly due to the Indian wedding season.
