NEW DELHI/OTTAWA. Trading activity on both the Indian and Canadian chickpea markets is currently moderate. India is experiencing liquidity problems, while world market prices are providing some support.

Subdued trading activity

The new chickpea crops from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka are now arriving at the mandis, but volumes are below seasonal expectations. Nevertheless, the market is under pressure. The decisive factors are subdued buying interest and tight liquidity in the wholesale sector, which are slowing down business transactions. Demand is mixed. Financial constraints are making new deals difficult, while falling revenues are weighing on stockists. Consumption usually picks up at this stage, but there has been little sign of this in the whole
