Coconuts: Strong purchase interest

MANILA. On the desiccated coconut market, offers cannot keep up with the demand.

Many big Philippine exporters are already fully booked for July and August, as buyers from Indonesia are looking for alternatives because of the poor availability, making the prices rise. Only desiccated from Sri Lanka is slowly dropping again, after the lack in supplies and the Ramadan break had driven prices to unusually high realms.

Coconut oil currently has a difficult position on the market; prices in Indonesia have dropped considerably in the last few weeks. The reason for this is the research conducted by the American Heart Association, according to which coconut oil is unhealthy due to the high fraction of saturated fatty acids. It remains to be seen if this can have long-term negative effects on the market.
