SOFIA. Competitive prices boosted export activities. Short-term projections are for prices to remain around current levels.

BULGARIA. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by the 12th of October 2017, farmers combined 83% of 418,224 ha available for harvest this year, collecting 2,021,585 mt of corn. Last year, aggregate output reached 2,226,094 mt. The higher yield this year is expected to increase output by at least 20%.

Corn: Early in the season, market sentiments drove farmers to market

Early during harvest, some farmers started selling, fearing a persistent bearish trend. Since the beginning of the marketing season, local prices have been in retreat, and the expected higher output this year on the background of expected strong corn supplies in the region, led market participants back then to accept lower market offers. Since then, prices have not experienced either a significant upward or a downward move.

Competitive prices boosted export activities

Exports rose early in the season, as by the end of last week, according to local authorities, only via Varna seaport, 217,473 mt of corn were shipped abroad; the figure is 550.5% higher than that of last year. The majority of corn goes to EU markets.
