Prices seem to find support in strong demand on the background of higher expected aggregate output.

BULGARIA. From this year’s harvest, farmers are expected to produce an aggregate output coming between 2.5 – 2.6 mmt. Soon the final estimates will become available for confirmation. However, although this year’s carry-over was quite high – 480,000 mt since prices were kept persistently strong by local market sellers till the very end of marketing season 2016-17, sales at current price levels are propelling shipped volumes abroad. This year’s market sentiments are quite different from those of last year, and buyers are benefiting from it.

Corn: moving beyond the entrenched habits of last season

Marketing season 2016-17 was characterized by tough regional competition, but local sellers kept prices on the upper side. Last year’s total exports reached 1,009,611 mt or 45.43% of output 2016, as average purchasing prices for August 2017 stood at 0.155 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria, according to local authorities.

Anyhow, current prices hover around 0.133-0.137 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria, maintaining a widely-spread, local buying campaign and in turn high export activities on a weekly basis. According to local authorities, by the 29th of October 2017, via Varna sea port were shipped out 217,473 mt, which on a year-to-year basis is 127.1% in favor of the current marketing year. Total exports from the country, by the 27th of the month, reached 478,668 mt.

As exports remain strong on a weekly basis, prices seem to find support in the strong demand. However, it is too early to make medium-term projections since the buying campaign is still underway.
