SOFIA. In the North regions, farmers are already selling their crop even before having completed harvest. Prices continue to fall.

Corn: the earlier projected higher outputs are being realized right now

BULGARIA. Favorable weather conditions throughout the year before the start of harvest in the North regions contributed to an increase in the yield potential of the crop. Only some fields, mainly throughout the Northwest and central North, were damaged by hailstorms earlier in the Summer – the damage was total since corn stalks were beaten down to the ground.

Farmers within the central North complain about strong winds that twisted the corn stalks in the fields, making it difficult for the normal pace of harvest, but overall, owners of corn fields are quite satisfied with what they have harvested so far. Yields have reached as high as 10 mt/ha in some North fields.

In the realm of prices

Harvest has not yet ended, but prices are falling by a few euros on a weekly basis. As a result, even though farmers are already in the midst of harvest, they have already written invoices to interested buyers. Their fear is prices will continue sliding on the bearish trend, which seems not to have yet reached a price floor.

However, since corn is the last grain crop to be harvested -- after that of barley, wheat, rapeseed and sunflower, -- some farmers claim they could afford to withdraw the crop from the market, hoping to realize better prices down the road. Such wishful thinking though might bring more troubles than realized hopes.
