Combines have already entered fields throughout Bulgaria. By the end of last week, only 4% of total available corn land has been harvested.

SOFIA. The market expects a harvest of at least 20% higher than that of last season, which stood at 2,226,094 mt. The reason is auspicious weather conditions earlier in the year within the general North regions. In the South, farmers complain about generally dry weather.

Corn: different regions tell different stories

This year, harvest has been generally belated. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by 7th of September 2017, harvested acreages lagged behind those of last year by 69%. Estimates of collected crop stands at 86,205 mt.

Early in the marketing campaign, farmers from the North regions expect a much stronger yield than the one they realized during harvest 2016. The favorable showers throughout the Spring and later the occasional rains during the Summer maintained the water reserves in the upper soil layer, which brought the crop to realizing higher yield potential.

However, not all regions throughout the country got the necessary precipitations, as some received only heat waves. Nevertheless, the affected fields are generally within the South, where corn output represents a minor fraction of total national output on a yearly basis. For instance, during harvest 2016-17, output from the general South regions of the country accounted for 5.20% of aggregate production.
