Gradually, farmers are entering fields throughout the country. Harvest on a mass scale to begin soon.

SOFIA. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, to-be-harvested corn fields stand at 420,721 ha. Just before the start of mass scale corn harvesting, fallen through acreages reached 1,612 ha, as the majority of such fields are situated within the North regions. Since this year, in comparison with last year, the weather has not allowed farmers to enter the fields earlier, by the end of last month, farmers combined only 1% of total available land for harvest.

Corn: Projected higher output

Farmers expect aggregate production this season to reach at least 2.7 mmt; output from harvest 2016-17 stood at 2,226,094 mt. The difference in output on a year-to-year basis is expected to come from the projected higher yield rather than from planting more acreages. Planted acreages for this season’s harvest lag behind those of the previous one only by 0.6%.

Favorable weather conditions earlier in the year – mainly throughout the North regions of the country – provided and maintained the necessary water reserves in the soil for corn to develop. The great majority of the crop is grown within the North regions, with the Northwest leading among the rest.

Fasten belts for lower prices

Although prospects look quite encouraging on the production front, those on the price front are discouraging. Farmers expect prices to start low. Throughout marketing season 2016-17, prices resisted substantial dips and as a result, corn was mainly traded on the domestic market. By the end of last month, domestic trade reached 1,263,000 mt while shipments to the world amounted to 1,009,611 mt.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, exports via marine ports lag behind by close to 65% on a year-to-year basis. By the 3rd of September 2017, shipments to foreign countries, via Varna sea port, accounted to 206,584 mt while no corn exports were recorded via Burgas seaport. At the end of marketing season 2016-17, remaining stocks stood 489,628 mt.
