The high temperatures deplete water reserves in the soil. August will be characterized by high temperatures and occasional rains.

SOFIA. Currently, sudden heavy rains, accompanied by what seems so far to be only mild hailstorms, are falling over regions in the Southwest of the country. Hailstorms are forecasted to go through regions in the North.

Corn: weather will be a defining factor

So far in the season, weather conditions have been favorable for the development of the crop. Some local farmers in the North expect average yield of about 6.5 mt/ha. After all, the majority of national production comes from the regions of the North. A case in point, during season 2016-17, outputs from the North regions represented close to 95% of total aggregate output.

Last year, dry weather exhausted the yield potential, and as a result, output was relatively low - 2,226,094 mt. However, although occasional rains are forecasted during August, which will maintain the water reserves in the soil during the hottest month of the year, hailstorms are expected to hit regions throughout the whole country. It might not be the lack of rains this year as much as the heavy hailstorms that could damage the crop while still in the fields. Anyhow, agro-metereological conditions are expected to overall favor the crop.
