Corn: Ongoing harvest

SOFIA. Yields are much higher this year. Some farmers experienced the effects from the European corn worm.

BULGARIA. Favorable weather conditions throughout the year made possible for fields within the North regions to realize much higher yield potential than it happened last year. Some farmers within the Northwest are recording an average yield of 10 mt/ha. According to them, depending on the hybrid of the crop and under optimal precipitation conditions, a corn yield could reach as high as 18 mt/ha. Some farmers are already using irrigation systems to realize the fullest potential of their corn fields.

Corn: harvest at full speed

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, by 14th of September 2017, farmers combined 15% of total available land for harvest, which this year stands at 418,728 ha. By that time, reported output reached 352,951 mt. Projections are for this year’s harvest to reach close to 2,7 mmt. Last year, national output was estimated at 2,226,094 mt.

Farmers within the central parts of the country and the Northeast actually complained of attacks from the European corn worm. The effects from the insect are minor and are confined only to some fields in the latter region.
