SOFIA. Regions within the country have received plenty of showers; in others, rains remain an expectation. Prices are on the upper side.

The recent showers have favoured the development of the grain in some regions. However, in other places, farmers are anxious about the development of their crops because of the lack of rain.

Estimates announced earlier this year concerning acreage amounted to as much as 440,000 ha, but now have to be revised down to 406,980 ha – a drop of 1.2% as compared to last year. The weather prevented many farmers from planting on time and caused delays throughout the country.

At the beginning of marketing year 2017-18, the carry-over was much higher – 580,000 mt. Since it became apparent that output would be abundant, prices started on a low level. In addition, farmers, anticipating a bearish season, sold their stocks and prices fell as low as 0.125 EUR/kg EXW at places. Price have now, however, recovered to 0.148 EUR/kg EXW Bulgaria. Prices are expected to remain on the upper side due to strong domestic demand as well as a vibrant export market.
