The regions throughout the North will contribute to the higher output this season. In some South fields, the dry weather this year has already exhausted the yield potential.

The general forecast till the end of the month is for dry weather and high temperatures, with occasional showers falling throughout the country. Today, fields in the Eastern regions of the country are expected to receive their portion of precipitation; although the rains will not be of much agro significance for the crops.

SOFIA. Since the beginning of August, crops throughout the South regions have mainly gone through their stages of maturity without relying on the necessary water reserves in the soil to realize the utmost yield potential. According to farmers from the central South regions of the country, local corn yields’ this season could be around 3.5 - 4.0 mt/ha in some fields because the fallen sporadic rains throughout the year did fail to maintain the necessary moisture content in the soil. However, those farmers, who have relied on irrigation systems, could well record on average as much as 6.5 mt/ha.

On the other hand, farmers throughout the North regions expect quite a prosperous harvest exactly because of sufficient amounts of rains throughout the year. The dry weather and heatwaves in the North regions alternated with advantageous showers, which infused the soil with sufficient amounts of moisture for the crop to grow and realize high yield potential.

Anyhow, the majority of the crop is harvested throughout the North regions. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, during harvest 2016-17, the North regions contributed 94,81% of the aggregate output, which stood at 2,226,094 mt. The rest was added by the South regions. Projections are for the upcoming output to be at least 20% higher than that of last season.
