In about a month, farmers could collect an output that could well be 20% more than that of last season.

Corn: expectations are for a strong harvest

SOFIA. Although unexpected rains belated and interrupted the harvests of barley, rapeseed and wheat this year, exactly these rains have been quite auspicious for the development of corn. Sporadic but sufficient showers, which provide the so much necessary soil moisture for the maturity of the crop, fall throughout the country. As a result, prospects for this year’s crop seem very encouraging. Last year, droughts negatively impacted the yield potential of the crop, and as a result, output 2016-17 was lower in a row of four harvesting years – 2,226,094 mt.

However, every coin has two faces. A real threat looms on the horizon, and it has a name – hailstorms. Today, hailstorms fell in regions of the Northwest while yesterday farmers complained of heavy storms confined to a few parts of the Northeast region. Hailstorms in the beginning of the month in the Northwest and central North took its toll on corn fields, totally hammering corn stalks down in the ground. Hailstorms could actually change the expected result.

Currently, some crops, depending on the hybrid types, are going through lactic and waxy maturity stages.
