During the next month, ago-meteorological conditions are vital for the development of the crop. Favorable weather will distinguish a strong harvest from a weak one.

SOFIA. Last Summer, droughts exhausted the potential of the crop and as a result, national output reached a four-years low - 2,226,094 mt. In addition, regional competition during the previous season slowed down export activities, and together with lower prices, discouraged farmers to heavily invest in the cultivation of the crop; for the upcoming harvest, farmers cultivated 412,034 ha, which is by 1.9% lower than planted acreages of the previous season, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

Corn: rains will raise the yield potential of the crop

Provided the agro-meteorological conditions in August were as those of July -- with the exceptions of the hailstorms, which levelled to the ground some corn fields, -- corn’s yield potential is expected to be much higher. Corn needs sufficient amounts of water, and watering the crop is the most effective -- natural or man-made -- means through which the yield potential of the crop could increase significantly. In addition, the development of the crop is extremely sensitive to the lack of water reserves in the soil, and as happened during last Summer, prolonged droughts in some regions, influenced the very formation of the corncob. Provided corn fields received the utmost necessary water amounts in the upcoming month, local farmers in some regions could harvest as much as 7 mt/ha. Last year, average national yield was estimated at 5.47 mt/ha. Some farmers are considering building irrigation systems to realize the crop’s fullest possible yield potential.
