Dates: 67% slump in exports

TEHRAN. April was an absolute disaster in terms of exports. Iran, in fact, only shipped as little as 17,650 mt of dates worth USD 15.294 million overseas as official customs statistics show. This is a 67% decline on the 53,683 mt shipped in March. At USD 48.325 million, the export value also ranged 68% higher in March.

Timing is everything

The annual comparison is not much better as Iran exported 37,070 mt of dates worth USD 33.341 million in April last year. Monthly exports, in other words, ranged 52% lower in terms of volume and 52% lower in terms of value than last year. Issue is not only that most dates were shipped before Ramadan started on 2 April this year but also that most exports took place before Nowruz, the Persian New Year, which was celebrated on 21 March.
