Goji berries: high volatility

DALIAN. Harvest delays and depleted stocks are the main drivers in China's goji berry market. Frost and speculations may add volatility.

Two-week harvest delay anticipated

Harvesting will start around 15 days later than last year in all key producing areas due to temperatures ranging below normal in the first half of the year. On the upside it should, however, be noted that the growth status of the trees is normal and similar to last year. Yet, the harvest delay will shorten the picking window in the Qinghai region. If the onset of frost arrives in time a harvest round may be lost.

Further price rises in store

As East Dawn Food reports goji berries in export quality are nearly sold out and stocks from the 2024 crop are quite diminished. Prices will, therefore, remain elevated in the second half of the year. The market witnessed a price hike in June and July. Quotations will continue to rise until November. Issue is that several domestic and international suppliers are currently sold out. Some factories also failed to secure enough stocks to meet annual contracts signed last year and will need to buy the new crop even at a loss. Traders holding inventories are, in addition, expected to drive speculations, which will sustain a highly volatile market.
