TEHRAN. While local traders report that drought and extreme heat will have an adverse impact on this year’s date production in Iran, the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) anticipates a 3.6% rise in the country’s production. Issue is that some provinces are less affected by extreme weather conditions than others. Prospects are, for instance, not bad in Hormozgan province, where harvesting is underway, but quite alarming in Kerman province.

Extreme heat causes damage

Traders report that extreme heat has reduced the crop in Kerman province, especially in Rigan county where date clusters are damaged. Drought has also caused problems in some groves. According to the Agricultural Organization of Kerman province annual fresh date production normally exceeds 150,000 mt and around 18,000 farmers are epmployed in cultivating dates on 28,000 ha.
