BANDAR BUSHEHR. Pollination has started in Bushehr’s palm groves, where farmers harvest 174,000 mt of dates every year. While pollination normally continues until late March, things are different this year. Issue is that dust storms are causing problems.

Outdated irrigation system

Unpleasant dust and haze will cause considerable delays meaning that pollination may continue right through until the end of April as it is conducted manually by dipping stamens into pistil clusters. Water supply is also a serious problem in Bushehr province as droughts coupled with reduced rainfall and lower groundwater levels are impacting the quantity and quality of the crop. Growers now need to switch from flood irrigation to drip irrigation, which will be a big help in solving the problem.

Bushehr province holds more than 5.50
