BRUSSELS/TEHRAN. EU imports have surged to record highs as the appetite for dates is growing. Harvesting has started in Iran.

Record EU imports

EU date imports climbed to a record high of 89,882 mt worth EUR 198 million (USD 219 million) between 1 January and mid-August. This presents a 22% rise in terms of volume and a 19% rise in terms of value on the 73,377 mt worth EUR 166 million (USD 184 million) imported in the same period last year. Tunisia may only be the world’s sixth largest table date producer according to International Nut and Dried Fruit Council statistics yet is the most important supplying country for the EU by far.
