TEHRAN. Iran ships more than 400,000 metric tonnes of dates overseas every year and is the third-largest exporter in the world. The market has now, however, witnessed a setback as the country has failed to approve the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) bills to counter money laundering and the financial support of terrorism.

International demand thrives

Market players state that exports are thriving. The main export destinations include the United Arab Emirates, which accounts for 17% of total exports, Pakistan (11%) and Russia (9%). In addition, it should be noted that Russia, Turkey (8%) and India (6%) reexport more than half of the volumes imported from Iran. The most popular varieties shipped from Iran are Piarom, Medjool and Mazafati and Zahedi dates. Several varieties are produced in the Khuzestan, Fars and Hormozgan, Kerman, Busher and Sistan and Baluchestan provinces.
