Dates: record crop and water crisis

BANDAR ABBAS. Although the prevailing water crisis is forcing producers to rethink the way in which dates are cultivated in Iran, a record crop has been harvested in Hormozgan Province.

Figures released by the Agricultural Organisation of Hormozgan Province show that a bountiful 196,000 mt of dates were harvested on 38,000 ha. This marks a 15% increase on last year and is attributed to fruitful young palm trees. Harvesting starts in July when the Almehtari dates are collected from the trees and continues until mid-November when the Piarom dates, also known as “chocolate dates”, are collected. This variety has a significant export value for the province.
