Desiccated coconuts: new US tariffs

MANILA. Dessciated coconuts are maintaining a solid level in the international market. Coconut oil is trading at a historical high. Trump has issued new import tariffs for Sri Lanka, the Philippines and Indonesia.

Firm market for desiccated coconuts

As TM Duché report FOB export prices are holding firm at USD 1.45-1.90 per pound in major markets such as the US and Europe. As prices have remained stable in the past weeks the market has clearly maintained its balance in a time of economic uncertainty. Demand is strong and the Philippines are still dominating this market with well-managed supply chains. Domestic prices have, however, risen a bit in the country with local processors facing cost pressures probably driven by the persistent rally in copra prices.

China is the most important buyer of desiccated coconuts from the Phillipines as the local crop is consumed fresh and consumption is high. Demand, however, subsides in summer, which gives produces a small break before buying resumes again in autumn.

Historically high coconut oil prices

Coconut oil has continued to rise with CIF Rotterdam quotations climbing to USD 2,992.50/mt for June/July. This comes very close to the USD 3,000/mt barrier with high demand and limited supplies as main drivers. Domestic coconut oil prices have also risen in the Philippines on the back of rising copra prices.

New US tariffs for Sri Lanka, Philippines and Indonesia

On Thursday, US President Donald Trump issued an executive order, which reduces the reciprocal tariff for Sri Lanka from 30% to 20%. The new tariff will apply as of 7 August 2025. As TM Duché highlights the US accounts for as much as 20% of Sri Lanka's coconut exports thereby contributing around USD 160 million per year to the country's export earnings. Sri Lanka's total coconut exports range at USD 857 million per year. In how far US importers will turn to other origins remains to be seen as Trump has also issued reciprocal tariffs of 19% for the Philippines and Indonesia.
