MALATYA. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has promised farmers still waiting for support in Malatya that payments will finally be made in September to compensate for the frost that virtually destroyed this year’s production of dried apricots. Exports have witnessed a sustained downturn.

Payments to be made at long last

Erdoğan announced that support is underway for farmers whose apricot production suffered losses due to agricultural frost. He outlined that payments amounting to TRY 3.1 billion have already been completed to farmers who have agricultural insurances in Malatya. Support payments of approximately TRY 3.8 billion will, in addition, start this month to farmers without insurance.

Temperatures will finally range lower in Malatya this week as the Turkish meteorological institute has forecast temperatures of 13-16C (55-61F) at night
