MALATYA. Weather conditions are excellent in Turkey with extremely cold temperatures and lots of snow. According to forecasts temperatures will range at -10 to -2C (14-28F) at night and between 2C to 4C (36-39F) throughout the day this week. Due to heavy snowfalls in the last few days the schools are closed in some districts of Malatya, where apricots are mainly grown.

Delayed bloom

In fact, the market is presently witnessing one of the coldest winters in the last twenty years with daytime temperatures being reported as low as -8C (18F) in some places. This will of course delay the blooming period, which normally starts around 1 March. As the cold weather conditions are expected to continue this week, blooming will rather start in mid-March, also meaning in mid-Ramadan. Upside is that exporters and farmers are currently able to wait and see how blooming will progress and assess developments for the new season.
