MADISON/OTTAWA. After the warm and humid weather in summer, there was an increased incidence of mould in the North American cranberry crops. As a result, the volume is lower than expected, but still higher than last year.

Lower production in Canada

In its current report, the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) estimates the production of dried cranberries for the 2021/22 season at 210,416 mt. This would be a good 2,500 mt above last year's level, which is mainly due to the larger production in the USA. This is estimated at 161,340 mt for the new season (2020/21: 156,242 mt). This amount can also compensate for the decline in Canada, whose production is almost 4,000 mt below last year's level. Humid summer weather on the American East Coast had led to above-average mould infestation of the cranberries in the USA and Canada, as reported by the INC. As a result, the amount of suitable fruit was lower than hoped.

High demand meets low stocks

After the good US production in the 2018/19 season, this is the third year with below-average volumes meeting very high demand. As the new goods will only be available in early December, there could still be shortages here. On the European spot market, however, prices have fallen in recent months; sliced cranberries from Canada are currently trading at EUR 3.60/kg FCA Spain.

Germany increases imports

Germany's imports in the period September 2020 to August 2021 have increased by 8.4% year-on-year. The country increased imports from Canada (+29%) and Chile (+192.2%) in particular, but imports from Austria are also almost 89% higher than last year. Shipments from the most important exporter, the USA, declined noticeably. In the period mentioned, Germany purchased 6,893 mt of US cranberries, which is 13.5% less than last season.

While discussions covered a wide range of topics from export opportunities, over health and the environment to artificial intelligence, visitor numbers were a bit disappointing. Industry representatives also highlighted the fact that the price fluctuations in Turkey are complicating negotiations between suppliers and buyers this season.
