QUÉBEC. The weather in the Canadian cranberry regions was characterised by high temperature fluctuations this summer. Despite a smaller organic crop, the yield prospects for the coming production are optimistic.

Insect infestation reduces organic supply

The summer had a few surprises in store for Canadian cranberry growers, but so far they have coped well. As the experts at Emblem Cranberry report, frost protection measures had to be introduced in some places at the beginning of August as the soil temperatures in the local bogs were approaching freezing point. In general, the past few months have been characterised by drastic temperature fluctuations.

Conventionally grown cranberries promise slightly above-average yields this year, which is good news for growers in view of the rising demand. The situation is different for organic cranberries, however, with lower availability to be expected due to pest infestation, which is also likely to cause prices to rise, according to Emblem Cranberry. The weather in the coming weeks will once again play a decisive role in how yields develop until the start of the harvest in October. During the INC Congress in May, Canadian production of dried cranberries was estimated at 45,450 mt, an increase of 7.7% compared to last year. The new crop will be available for export from January 2025.

EU imports up by a good 12%

Since the beginning of this year (1 January - 1 September 2024), a total of 25,390 mt of cranberries have been imported into the EU from third countries, representing a year-on-year increase of 12.3%. While shipments from the main growing countries USA and Canada increased by 32.6% to 12,809 mt and 12.5% to 9,865 mt respectively, imports from Chile fell by 37% to 2,626 mt in the same period. The main importers in the EU were the Netherlands (+15.8% to 17,030 mt), Germany (-5.6% to 1,850 mt) and Poland (-24.5% to 1,540 mt).
