AYDIN. Next year, buyers will have to expect further price jumps for dried figs from Turkey. Traders are worried over the figs they have in store.

Problems with figs in store

Large Turkish dried fruit exporters have already bought up most of the marketable dried figs. The quality of this year’s crop is far from satisfactory. Now, concerns are also being voiced over the quality of the figs in store. The main export business will continue until the end of December, after which the market will quieten down. The market will then largely depend on long-term contracts until the arrival of the new crop. Buyers requiring promptly in the new year will have to be prepared to pay high prices.

Exports with a clear lead over last year

Despite the high price level and the quality problems, exports are going well. Since the beginning of the season, 14,047 mt of dried figs have been shipped overseas, an increase of 11% over last year. In contrast to this, exports only amounted to just over 32,000 mt by the end of December 2017.
