Dried figs: export season to start surprisingly early

AYDIN. Turkey's Ministry of Commerce has set the official starting date for the new export season for dried figs at 6 October. This has taken the market by surprise given that delays have occured during the crucial drying phase.

Too rash?

As heavy rains are still causing delays to drying exporters had rather anticipated the new season to start in mid-October. Precipitation was also high in August and quality has been adversely impacted. Temperature fluctuations are also no help. With daytime termperatures exceeding 35C (95F) and nighttime temperatures dropping as low as 20C (68F) condensation is an issue. Most fruits are simply not dry enough yet.

Consequently, only small volumes of the new crop are available at present, which has caused prices to surge to TRY 150/kg. This comes as
