Dried figs: exporters demand support

AYDIN. Although dried fig shipments from Turkey to EU countries are proving more difficult this year, exports have so far remained at a similar level to last year. Exporters wish for more support in reclaiming rejected shipments.

Exports to the EU are subject to enormous risks for Turkish dried fig suppliers this season. Due to climatic changes and the resulting unfavourable weather conditions, above-average levels of aflatoxin and ochratoxin were detected in a larger number of fig shipments, which do not comply with EU regulations. As a result, the European Union has increased the inspection frequency of Turkish dried fig shipments from 20% to 100%.
