Dried figs: fierce competition from Spain

MADRID. Although Spain can most certainly not compete with Turkey in terms of volume, the quality of the wild growing figs is particularly convincing. Rice flour is tpyically used to prevent the fruits from sticking. In addition, the prices are most certainly highly competitive.

According to the INC, Spain's annual production of dried figs ranges at 7,000 metric tonnes. Fresh fig prodcution exceeds 30,000 metric tonnes. In Spain it is not unusual to pick and dry wild figs. Traders report that there simply is no commercial cultivation of figs as is for instance the case in Turkey.
