ESTAHBAN. Frost, drought and low rainfall spell trouble for this year’s dried fig production in Iran. There is, however, a twist to the tale. Pollination has started in Estahban county, which is famous for its rain-fed figs..

Caprifigs required

The figs grown in Estahban require pollination since unfertilised fruits tend to fall from the trees. As caprifigs provide this pollen the growers are presently assessing these inedible fruits to ascertain that they will provide enough pollen and bees. Caprifigs largely determine the volume and quality of Estahban’s fig production. Suitable caprifigs that have enough pollen and bees are green and by no means yellow or overripe.
